The third Oregon All-Star Roller Derby Team Starter is the highest-voted junior on the list. She came in third place in the voting and received MVP votes from the Northwest’s most esteemed junior derby writers, David Overman and Elwood Bruise. The Rose City Rosebuds’ Jesus Feist is simply a superstar. This year, Feist served as the Rosebuds’ captain in 2012 and led them to the Northwest Junior Derby Championship.
When I saw her skate in June against the Emerald City Junior Gems, Jesus Feist showed an ungodly ability to not only know what to do at any given moment but to also effectively communicate what needed to be done. She is the truest definition of a pivot. Yet, like any great player, she has no problem popping on the jammer star and racking up points.
“I got into roller derby after a few of my friends from school got involved and convinced my sister (Foxy Shazam) and me to join in March of 2010,” Jesus Feist said. “I love roller derby because it’s a sport where you can both challenge yourself athletically and be a part of an accepting and supportive community.”
2012 was a special year for the Rosebuds: “I enjoyed everything in 2012. Winning the NW Junior Championships was the cherry on top of the season! Another thing that made this season pretty darn special was having the chance to be a captain. I adore each of my teammates more than life itself, so having the chance to represent them was an honor.”
At sixteen, Feist still has two seasons left with the Rosebuds. So, you can look forward to another exciting 2013 season for the Rosebuds. “A handful of the Rosebuds’ travel-team skaters have aged up to the adult league this year,” Feist added. “So, I am excited to build a new team dynamic and practice hard for the 2013 season!”
In closing, Feist added, “It is beyond an honor to even be considered for this list. I would like to thank my coaches White Flight and JK Rolling. They are such inspiring people, and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
What others had to say about Jesus Feist:
“Jesus Feist was not only probably the biggest individual contributor to the Rosebuds this season, she was also the captain of the team that won the NW Junior Roller Derby Championships. She was practically impossible to get around as a blocker. As a jammer, she picked up key points at key times for Portland during the tournament. Not to mention she is definitely a great leader worthy of the ‘C’ on her arm. That not only yells ‘all-star,’ but it also screams ‘MVP’ in my little world.” – Elwood Bruise (visit Elwood’s more in-depth interview with Jesus Feist from earlier this year)
“Jesus Feist has an incredible head for the game. She’s one of the smartest derby skaters I have seen (adult or junior), and she was instrumental in leading her team to the 2012 NW championship. She’s also my pick for MVP.” – David Overman
