Who’s New Hampshire Roller Derby?
Oh, wait. You mean that team that beat River City and Dominion at ECDX that you didn’t even know was a full W.F.T.D.A. member? You mean the same NH Roller Derby who won every bout this year except against Suburbia, Montreal and Maine? (And then soundly whomped Maine five months late) Yea. It’s that New Hampshire Roller Derby. The same one that Flat Track Stats has as #65 out of 154. Not too shabby.
Scoring the points and earning lead jammer is a skater by the name of Chicana Bruzya. She’s quick on her feet and unafraid to test herself. She has the power and skill to back up the guts. At ECDX, she won out against the speed of Dominon’s Jasmin Facun and the brute strength of a one-on-one fight with River City’s Scarriet Tubman. And that, derby folks, is impressive.
Again, since I have not seen her skate in person, I wanted to call in some others to give thei r thoughts on this up-and-coming jammer.
A long time skater with Skate Free or Die, Chicana grew right along with her team and no doubt was more than a little responsible for NHRD’s meteoric rise through the WFTDA ranks this year. Great things come in small, explosive packages with Chicana. Besides her skate skills, she’s smart on the track and is always looking several plays ahead. Her blocks are powerful, but her teamwork makes them effective. With an infectious smile, it’s impossible to not have fun when she’s around, even when she’s just beat you on the track. – Bitches Bruze
As an alumni of NHRD, Chicana has been with us since the beginning when we were just a handful of players making 1 travel team and has seen the league grow over the years into what it is today. If you’ve had the pleasure of skating against Chicana Bruyza you know what a menace she can be on the track. Often times she gets underestimated because of her short stature but, opponents are quickly set straight when they see what a force she is on the track.
She does double duty as a jammer and a blocker and if you don’t pay close attention when you’re on the track with her you will never know what hit you. She’s incredibly competitive but, is never a sore loser (which doesn’t normally go hand in hand). She’s fierce, quick, a solid hitter and has a knack for capitalizing on your weaknesses.
As a teammate though, she is one of the sweetest people you will ever come to know and is fondly looked at as the “Mother Hen” in NHRD. She calls you out on your swearing, and grammar and questionable outfit choices. She’s always there to listen or to tell you that you look pretty on your ugly days. – Ivanna B-Vicious
