It was a good and some not so good of a year in the Latin music industry. Latin music genres pop and bachata led with the most Latin music awards, radio play and fan favorites leaving reggaeton, salsa and merengue behind with hopes for the latter genres to make a comeback once again. New artists have come aboard, some are ignored and some have left their music behind.
This year’s top Latin album leader was Romeo Santos’ with “Formula: Vol. 1” followed by Prince Royce’s “Phase II” and the new pop Mexican group 3BallMTY’s “Intentalo.” The banda and grupera Mexican-American diva Jenni Rivera’s “Joyas Prestadas” rose to No. 4 after her unexpected death in December. Don Omar’s album “Don Omar Presents MTO2: New Generation” was at No. 5.
Speaking about Don Omar who not only was the most popular online, he also took the No. 1 spot on the Latin Artists recap which is based on sales, touring revenue, airplay and social activity.
Some new artists that made their way into the Latin music world this past year were Michel Teló, Gocho, 3BallMTY, Juan Magán, Matt Hunter and the only female to dominate music charts within a short time frame Leslie Grace.
Other artists have been around for a while but for whatever reason have not been given the music attention they deserve – Luis Damon, Lefty Perez, Miles Pena, Rey Ruiz, Manny Manuel, A&C La Banda just to name a few.
As for the mostly acclaimed Latin artist not only on Latin but also American television networks was Marc Anthony. He had a major role on ¡Q’Viva! The Chosen – a Latin talent reality show televised on Fox, Univision and in 21 countries; a mentor on Fox’s X Factor, special guest and recipient of Billboard’s Hall of Fame award televised on Univision and special television performances with Tony Bennett and Arthur Hanlon.
Indeed there are those that left a mark or two after their death as the Puerto Rican legendary music pioneers Ruth Fernandez and Yomo Toro. Also to mention is the unexpected and shocking death of the Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera in December.
