Brian Scott earned his 11th top 10 finish of the season with a seventh-place run in the Ford EcoBoost 300 Nationwide Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida on Saturday. Scott, driving the #11 Dollar General Toyota Camry, ended the 2012 season with a ninth-place finish in points, his second-straight top 10 points finish with Joe Gibbs Racing.
The rest of the JGR team had uncharacteristic rough days, as Joey Logano and Ryan Truex both had problems. Logano, in the #18 GameStop Toyota, was hardly a factor at the front of the field, leading just one lap in the race. Logano finished the season with nine wins in the Nationwide Series, in addition to one Cup Series win; Logano joins Penske Racing next season.
Truex, driving the #20 Grime Boss Toyota, finished 38th following an accident on Lap 66; it was his first finish outside the top 15 for JGR this season. Truex earned one pole for JGR this year as well as a runner-up finish at Dover in June.
Regan Smith won the race over JGR Cup driver Kyle Busch. Brendan Gaughan, Sam Hornish Jr. and Austin Dillon completed the top five.
JGR wrapped up the owner’s championship in Nationwide competition for the fourth time in five years. The #18 beat the #6 team of Roush-Fenway Racing with 2012 Nationwide Series driver’s champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. behind the wheel by 23 points. The #18 had six different drivers throughout the season: Logano, Michael McDowell, Truex, Mark Martin, Drew Herring and Denny Hamlin.
Logano and Hamlin will both use backup cars in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series finale, the Ford EcoBoost 400, after practice accidents. Hamlin, who qualified the #11 FedEx Express Toyota Camry on owner’s points in 41st, won’t have as far to drop back as his teammate Logano, who was to start on pole in the #20 Home Depot/readbeacon.com Toyota for the race. Busch also scraped the wall in the #18 M&Ms Toyota, but the damage was repairable.
