The 2012 American Music Awards brought stars from around the country to Hollywood Sunday night, and the real fun began before the first award was even given out. With so many different artistic personalities and creative minds grouped together in one place, in this case Nokia Theater and the red carpet outside the theater at L.A. Live, it’s a people-watcher’s dream come true.
We have a brand new photo slideshow full of this year’s American Music Awards red carpet fashion here, and we’re hard at work on an AMAs winner’s list. (Update: Click here for a FULL list of 2012 AMA winners.) Get started by checking out the best and worst of the red carpet, then stay tuned throughout the evening for updates, new stories and more photos!
2012 American Music Awards Red Carpet Fashion: Hits and Misses at the AMAs
There were a few style trends that seemed to be on display at the AMAs this year; unfortunately, most of them were pretty awful. From Gwen Stefani’s performance outfit to Jordin Sparks on the red carpet, mesh netting seemed to be all the rage at the AMAs on Sunday night. While the odious fabric almost worked on the front-woman of post-punk pop-rock band No Doubt, all it did for Jordin Sparks was earn her a place on our rather extensive American Music Awards Worst Dressed List.
(Check out a sampling of our picks for Worst Dressed at the AMAs in our slideshow above!)
Ill-fitting lace was another problem, the worst offender being Scandal darling Kerry Washington. We usually love Kerry Washington in almost anything, but this canary-yellow lace tablecloth wasn’t doing her petite frame and caramel coloring any favors. (Olivia Pope needs to swoop in and fix this, STAT.)
Worst Dressed at the 2012 AMAs: Ginnifer Goodwin or Jordin Sparks?
The American Music Awards red carpet fashion disasters continued, with stars like Heidi Klum and Phoebe Price showing up wrapped in gold foil: Heidi wearing too little, and Phoebe swathed in far too much. Actress, author and funny-lady Jenny McCarthy got the gold look right, using the metallic fabric only in the long, fitted skirt of her dress, toning things down and sexing them up with a plunging black bodice and nipped waist. Her up-swept hair and smoky eyes sealed the deal; head-to-toe, McCarthy had one of the best looks of the evening.
Finally, we come to Ginnifer Goodwin. Oh, Ginnifer…we’ve gotten past the ‘G’ in your name, and we’ve even gotten used to the pixie-cut. In fact, we like it. But we do not like the dress you chose to wear to the 2012 American Music Awards on Nov. 18. For one thing, it looked appropriate for a spring wedding or bridal shower. Maybe a super-fancy garden party, but definitely not a rock-and-roll and hip-hop heavy awards show in November.
